EU MANTIVE O MEU TRABALHO PRA DEUS

While I was pastor of the Baptist Church in a university town of North Carolina, I was made to realize that as a preacher I was a dismal failure. Enquanto eu era pastor da Igreja Batista em uma cidade universitária na Carolina do Norte, eu percebi que como um pregador eu era um fracasso.

Parents from all over the state wrote and requested me to look after the spiritual welfare of their sons in the university. Os pais de todo o estado escreveram e me pediram para cuidar do bem-estar espiritual de seus filhos na universidade. I prepared sermons with students in mind and was glad to see that they showed their appreciation by attending our Sunday services in great numbers. Eu preparei sermões com alunos em mente e fiquei feliz de ver que eles mostraram o seu apreço por assistir nossos cultos de domingo em grande número. We also appointed a week of prayer and preaching, with the single purpose of winning them to Christ and they attended the evening meetings. Fizemos  uma semana de oração e pregação nos cultos a noite com o único propósito de ganhá-los para Cristo, e muitos deles participaram.About the middle of the week, however, their interest seemed to turn into opposition.

No meio da semana, no entanto, o seu interesse parecia se transformar em oposição. The spirit of mischief possessed them. O espírito do mal possuía eles. One night they tried to put out the lights. A bright student had caught a part of my sermon of the night before and he was giving it in thought and tone for the benefit of his fellow students who responded by applause and laughter. Um estudante brilhante tinha pego uma parte do meu sermão da noite anterior e ele estava me imitando para o benefício de seus colegas estudantes que responderam com aplausos e risos. As I walked before an open window I heard my voice imitated in prayer floating out. Enquanto eu caminhava diante de uma janela aberta, ouvi novamente outro aluno imitando minha voz em sua oração flutuando para fora do quarto. I felt defeated and seriously considered resigning from the pastorate. Eu me senti derrotado e seriamente considerava renunciar ao pastorado. No one had been saved.

Ninguém tinha sido salvo.

After a restless night I took my Bible and went into a grove of trees and remained there until three o'clock in the afternoon. Depois de uma noite agitada eu tomei minha Bíblia e entrei em um bosque e lá permaneci até as três horas da tarde. As I read I asked God to show me what was the matter. Como eu li e pedi a Deus para me mostrar qual era o problema. The Word of God searched me through and through, giving me a deep sense of sin and helplessness such as I had never had before. A Palavra de Deus me esquadrinhou por completo, dando-me um profundo sentimento de pecado e desamparo, como eu nunca tinha tido antes.

That evening the students listened reverently and at the close of the service, two rows were filled with those who responded to the invitation. Naquela noite, os alunos me ouviram com reverência e, ao final do culto, duas linhas foram preenchidos com aqueles que responderam ao convite. The revival continued day after day until more than seventy of the students confessed Christ. A revitalização continua dia após dia, até que mais de setenta dos alunos confessaram Cristo.

What Did It? Quem  fez isso?

The practical question is, "What did it?" A questão prática é: "quem fez?" Certainly not I. I fear it was I who kept God from doing it for a long time. Certamente não fui eu. Temo que eu mantive Deus de fazer sua obra por um longo tempo. Out of that day's experience of waiting on God, there came to me a clear-cut distinction between influence and power. Fora da experiência desse dia de esperar em Deus, não veio a mim uma distinção clara entre influência e poder.

Influence is made up of many things: intellect, education, money, social position, organization--all of which ought to be used for Christ. Influência é composto de muitas coisas: intelecto, educação, dinheiro, posição social, a organização - que deveria ser usado para Cristo. Power is God Himself at work unhindered by our unbelief and other sins. O poder é o próprio Deus no trabalho sem impedimentos por nossa descrença e outros pecados. The New Testament word power holds the secret. O poder da palavra do Novo Testamento contém o segredo. The power from on high was no other than the power of the Holy Ghost touching the soul through the living Word and giving it a birth from above. O poder do alto não era outro senão o poder do Espírito Santo que toca a alma através da Palavra viva, dando-lhe um nascimento a partir de cima. I had been trusting and testing many other good things, only to fail. Eu tinha sido confiante e testar muitas outras coisas boas, apenas para falhar. The touch of God by His Holy Spirit did what my best efforts could not do. O toque de Deus pelo Seu Espírito Santo fez o que meus esforços não podia fazer.
